Lighting The Inner Lamp - Faith Beyond Rituals

Faith is not anti-science, it simply lies beyond therealm of scientific measurement. Most lives, knowingly or unknowingly, are driven by faith. Like electricity, you may not see faith itself, but you can clearly witness the light it produces in a person’s life. Though invisible, faith’s impact is unmistakably visible. Many people engage in daily religious activities, praying, visiting temples, performing rituals, but when results don’t meet expectations, they grow disillusioned. They blame the very practices they once embraced. The real question is: Were these activities done with genuine faith? And what kind of results were you expecting, material success, worldly happiness? If that’s the case, it’s like asking a tree of wisdom to yield mere grass instead of fruit.
Today, let’s explore the true goal of religion: inner transformation, through three practical steps:
Step 1: Observe Your Practice
Before visiting a temple, we check our offerings and attire, but do we ever inspect what we carry within? Our heads may bow, our hands may fold, lips may
move in prayer, but is our heart truly involved? Often, we perform rituals mechanically, while our minds wander, to our homes, markets, or mobilephones. Are we offering a deepak to God, or are we lighting the lamp of wisdom within? The remedy lies in right understanding and firm resolve. True devotion comes from awareness, not automation.
Step 2: Overcome Worldly Desires
Ask yourself: Why do I perform these rituals? Is it to purify myself and shed karmic bonds, or to gain comforts, pleasures, or avoid suffering? If driven by desires or fear, religious practice becomes a transaction. But when done with the aim of inner purity and liberation, it becomes transformative. Real success lies not in achieving worldly goals, but in aligning with the higher purpose.
Step 3: Walk the Path of Liberation
Religion is not just tradition, it is the path to happiness, clarity, and connection with the Divine. Examine your karmas and dissolve them through mindful practice. Each spiritual act should draw you closer to liberation, not deeper into bondage. All this is possible, through right knowledge, sincere practice, and conscious transformation. Let each step of your faith journey be a move toward the Divine.
